In the Spring of 2004 Mike McColm, Garrett Siegers and Cornell Menking found one another and began playing music. Mike was, and still is, the Director of Jatun Sacha Foundation, the largest environmental NGO in Ecuador. Garrett was, and still is, the Director of EcoMadera, a sustainable exotic woods program under the Jatun Sacha Foundation. Mike and Cornell are both Ph.D.'s in Education and met when Mike came to Cornell to see about teaching at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, where Cornell was, and still is, the Director of Graduate Programs in Education - and now also Director of the Office of International Programs. That meeting began with formal talk of education projects, but when bluegrass was mentioned the two basically never returned to talking business. Mike invited Cornell to jam with him and Garrett, and the rest is history. The past years have seen a variety of members come and go, but we maintain our fairly traditional sound and play a couple times a month at Quito cafes and other various events. Today Deeper South is kept solid by Steve Karolous, a fantastic electric bass player from a jazz background (his wife is at the U.S. Embassy). Also joining us recently is Rick Nelson on the dobro (he's a school book distributor in Quito). |
